Florida Civil War Facts

Overall

Florida was the 3rd state to suceed from the Union on January 10, 1861. Florida provided 17,334 of her sons for the war effort which translates to 0.5% (ranked 32nd out of 44 states and territories) of the total men who served on both sides of the conflict. There were a total of 168 raids, skirmishes and battles in the state. Florida had 2 Union P.O.W. Camps at Fort Jefferson (Dry Tortugas Islands) & Fort Pickens and 1 Confederate P.O.W. Camp at St. Augustine (Castle San Marcos)

After Florida seceded from the Union in January 1861, a number of unofficial flags flew over the state. The general assembly passed an act directing Governor Madison S. Perry to adopt "an appropriate device for a State flag which shall be distinctive in character."

Six months later the Governor had the Secretary of State record the description of Florida's first official flag. Whether it was ever raised over the Capitol or in the field is unknown. The flag shown here is reconstructed from a written description.

This was the first official flag in 1861.
